Who Owns What on Web 2.0

OK, who's the winner, who's the winner?
This makes me think about a question that was raised by my friend Matthew on Linked.in. How do Web 2.0 companies really survive? Can they make it purely on ads revenue or are they just waiting for someone to buy them? How much of the Web 2.0 world is not ruled by a bunch of corporations?

there's no winner. because there's no game.
Obviously, that's all IMHO etc etc. What I feel is that there's no winner - because there's no game. Money is a matter of service, of "value" of things.
Unfortunately, everything that the web 2.0 is becoming has a great value but at the same time can't be bought. Like water. Like air. We're building a society based on the flow of information, so either we start paying for bits of information (a-la Snowcrash, the Gargoyles figures) or we accept the fact that this "business model" can't survive.
It's time for new gamers. New players.
However - this system is creating itself, justifying itself, just like the financial market. Ads don't pay, I think it's well known. Advertising annoys, but this is a thing that is better kept secret - because it would lead to a collapse of many sides of our economy. If ads are discovered to be worthless - no more ads agencies. No more business for them. Products will have to cost more (or less, everybody has His Own Right Idea about that), people will have to pay more (or less), things will change. And a new equilibrium must arise.
Changes? No, thanks. Let's keep things as they are until they collapse. THEN we start thinking about it. Er, sorry - then THEY'll start thinking about it, because I'll be retired on a tropical island drinking margaritas. Hey, it is working with bigger problems (pollution, environmental issues, global warming, wars, famine, water shortage), why changing a successful business model? :)
What I hope? A world where everyone has food and house guaranteed. Because the world can sustain us all. After that, we'll see what's really important. Oh, sorry, that's Star Trek, isn't it?
pay-per-bit
Sure it can't be bought? It cannot at a global scale, for every service, but we have a few examples in which it CAN, or at least they try to. The pay-per-post fortunately didn't work out, it couldn't, impossible. As you say, it's a service like air, water. But what if the rumours are true? After all, Google is relying purely on revenue to survive. I think non-intrusive advertisement is not a rotten business model, just one that has many fallacies , but it still is way better than the previous ones. I'd like to have a million wikipdia, but I guess is too much to ask, right? If prometeus is coming, what can we expect from the future?
Well, that's what they've always been done, isn't it? ^_^
On the other hand, what do you suggest regarding the pay-per-bit idea. I mean, something that can actually be done, all considered. ^_^
