Android - Google, Linux and Mobile Phones, what more can you cask for?

I've been waiting to post something about Android since its release, but I wanted to have a working demo before saying anything about it. So here it is mister Sergey Brin presenting Google's open platform for mobiles to the World.

Google Android

You can really the potential of this platform, even 3D graphics and games look great. But the best part is:

[...] but the best applications are not here yet. That's because they are going to be written by you and many other developers just like you. We'd like to reward these developers and recognise them as much as possible.

Google is going to give 10 million dollars to the best Open Source applications for Android. The great thing is that everyone in the World will benefit form this development and will be able to use them for free. This is the power of Open Source, Google knows that very well and is doing the right thing. Apple, Microsoft, are you listening?

Functionalities

Victor,
Android's functionalities loosely resemble the iPhone's IMO. A real OSS alternative to the iPhone is openmoko

they are two very different projects though, I'll post something about it.

Thank you for sharing useful information.I'm assuming that it will support Java, although being Linux it will run C++ if it is compiled for the phone. I would use Java though, because you won't need to cross compile.
