Silence is Sexy joins Mininova, distributing their new album for free
From the mb: More and more more artists are discovering the benefits of our free Content Distribution (CD) service. Silence is Sexy is the first Dutch rock band to release their complete new album this way. ‘This Ain’t Hollywood’ is a must-download if you are into bands like Radiohead, Editors, Coldplay and Interpol.
An increasing number of music producers see that giving away their content for free is the right way to build a fan-base. These producers are often using Mininova CD to distribute their content to a broad audience. Nowadays more than 750 publishers are actively using Mininova CD to publish content.
By the way, the Silence is Sexy’s first album is also available at our Content Distribution service. We hope a lot more artists will follow this example!
I'm listening to it right now. Regardless of how it turn out I am happy that more and more bands are choosing to distribute their music through the Nine Inch Nails model or a similar one, which has been proven to be the right one. It's pointless to fight against free distribution and sharing of music, it is instead more intelligent to embrace a new model, one which can accomplish commercial success and love for the community, seizing the distributing and looking at it as positive externalities. People do share things, ideas, emotions and therefore music. It's a good thing, it's a sane process that depicts a vibrant community willing to share knowledge. The money comes from different sources, Trent Reznor gave a possible solution, but it's not the only one. In these days of evolving technology also the very ideas of copyright, intellectual property, property itself are under discussion. We should be able to understand that and find out what we can accomplish.
It's a journey I am excited to embark.

By the way...Radiohead did
By the way...Radiohead did the free music thing before NIN. Trent used it as a model for his method.
That is not entirely
That is not entirely correct, I covered the story in this post:

In Rainbows, was released on 10 October 2007 as a digital download for which customers chose their own price. Trent was very well ware of the system long before Radiohead.
Year Zero was released on April 16, 2007, and subsequently Trent invited people to remix his work. The bonus DVD-ROM included with the CD release contains multi-track files from the entire Year Zero album in GarageBand and Ableton Live formats, as well as a demo version of the Ableton Live software, and 44100 Hz WAV-format files of the album's individual track portions, for use in any non-linear music editing software such as Pro Tools or Digital Performer. Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D was then released on November 20, 2007 digital download, CD/DVD-ROM combo, and high-quality triple vinyl.
He also had another experiment going on at the time: The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!, produced by Trent Reznor for Saul Williams, released on November 1, 2007.
I also have reminiscences of something called The limitless potential... since then, he set up an official remix website for people to express creatively.
His last works, Ghosts I-IV and The Slip were released under a creative commons license.

He went a bit further than Radiohead. Also, they did not have a real business model, since they only offered a digital download with no value added. Trent made it very clear that you have to differentiate the products you are offering and give the people a real reason to buy your work. He did, and it worked, that's a real business model.
Cheers,
